My Readership Question

Antony Loewenstein is thrilled to announce:
My first book, My Israel Question, was released in 2006. Nearly seven years after becoming a best-seller, I’m proud to announce that one of the Middle East’s leading publishers, All Prints, has just released an updated Arabic edition.
The Arab world has some of the world's highest levels of illiteracy. Antony has found his niche.

As for 'leading publishers', well...
Greece annually translates five times more books from English than the entire Arab world...Spain translates more books from English to its language than the entire Arab world has in 1000 years—one thousand years.

Interesting statistics, and one cannot help but be troubled by them.

If more books were translated into Arabic, would they be read? How about translations into languages actually spoken in much of the Islamic world? Are the statistics so dire there, too? Urdu? Languages from Indonesia and Malaysia? Touareg?

What could concerned people do to help out?

"...after becoming a best-seller, I'm pleased to anounce..."
What, did he sell himself or the book??

I hope it's in its rightful place - the fantasy section.
