14 Year Old Girl needs to Harden Up.

Media have gone nuts over the story of Novak Djokovic's sweaty, sweaty Australian Open shirt being thrown (depending who you believe):

a) Into the crowd or
b) Directly at a young 14 year old girl who believes it was 'robbed' from her by an older woman in a manner similar to a (genuinely disgraceful) event at a baseball game.

The 14 year old had a big cry (literally) to the media which started a witch-hunt. The 'witch' in question, a Mrs Yael Rothschild had this to say (presumably after media hunted her down:
"When the shirt was thrown, there would have been 20 excited people, all with their hands out," she said.

"After (it had been) thrown, there would have been 19 disappointed people.

"Such is life.
Indeed. Why this 14 year old, or indeed a mass of poorly spelled (presumably young) commenters underneath the piece believe it was really intended for her rather than randomly hurled is beyond me. Stuff gets thrown into the crowd at sporting matches as a matter of course and there are plenty of earlier examples of what goes on at the game.

Perhaps Djokovic can mail a set of his dirty undies to the girl to keep her happy. Rothschild is now under pressure by way of fatuous Internet polls, to auction the shirt for charity. Why? Winners are grinners and it's hers.

The 14 year old's parents should not be letting her appear in the media or be identified in any way. I'm not going to name her.

No. This is a child who is being raised to believe everything is handed to her. Fortunately, the Neo-Nazis at Stormfront have sided with her.

Stand your ground, Mrs Rothschild.

Your advice is kind of like telling a robbery victim to shut up and take it.

That girl probably did get that shirt swiped from her after reading Mrs Rothschild's explanation.

After watching the video she absolutely did reach in-front of that girl and steal her shirt.

Let that Rothchild witch burn publicly regardless of what Stormfront thinks. I have no idea why you would want to defend that kind of behavior.

I've come to the conclusion that you are a major asshole, and I hope that you do not now, or ever plan to, have children.

As a father of five, I am used to letting children win when it's close. You simply do not go all out, all knees-and-elbows out, to "beat" a child at shit like this.

Sometimes setting a positive example as a gracious and fair-playing responsible adult is more important than "winning".

Hmmm I wonder if you have adopted this position because of the ethnicitiy of the person who ended up with the t-shirt.

I wonder if you would have adopted the same position if the woman who snatched the shirt wore a hajib.

Straw man, Ari Lewin.

The woman did not "snatch" it out of the hands of a crying five year old little girl. It was thrown into the crowd and she caught it. Simple.

And yes, I thought the 14 year old girl was delusional when I first heard her on the radio, well before there was an Internet hunt for the other woman. So your conspiracy theory is plain wrong, as well as frankly offensive.

'Ari',

While you are wondering whether Dan is a racist, you have outed yourself as a racist.

That is so fucked, who thinks like that?! I disagreed with Dan and still do about the principle of the thing but it never entered my head for a second that Dan's position had anything to do with "TEH FILTHY ROTTEN JOOOOOOOS", there is something wrong with you if that was your first thought.

If the lady's name was Mary Margaret O'Reilly or whatever a "typical catholic name" is and Dan was catholic would you automatically say he stood up for her because they share a religion???

You bigot.

Despite thinking that the woman was just slightly over-zealous in grabbing the shirt (it's just a sweaty shirt, you morons!) I wish you hadn't linked to the Stormfront website.

My day has been ruined knowing cretins like that exist on earth, and i fear that any length of shower will fail to wash off the dirty layer of scum I feel has permeated my every sense of being.

I watched the video after hearing this lady being publicly chastised on 2gb by Chris Smith. (!)

The tennis player (TP) was filmed walking toward the audience and throwing his shirt toward the audience.

Mrs R was only watching the TP approaching the stand. She was clearly very excited and looked at nothing else. The TP threw the shirt upwards and MRS R reached out and caught it.

She looked neither right left or behind and so did not see the 14 year old's disappointed expression or anything else!!

Clearly she imagined that there were other people (19 or 20, by all accounts) just as excited as she was, and her use of the phrase "there would have been" clearly indicates she imagined other excited attendees, especially since, I gather, a TP's shirt is regarded as a trophy.

The TP himself just threw the shirt in the girl's general direction. He did not yell out to the girl and it was no skin off his nose who caught it - one of about ten people might have caught it, but Mrs R was the one who reached out.

The kid was disappointed - but to imply that the lady deliberately took it away from her is nonsense -the only thing Mrs R was focused on was the TP and what he was doing. that's evident from the video clip i saw.

Unfortunately the 14 yr old has fallen into the trap of thinking everyone else was in her head and knew what she wanted and hoped.

The only reason I even paid attention to this whole pathetic incident is that a very nasty feeling has crept into it.
But then people have felt nasty about the sacking of the temporary Wiggle too, so ther's no accounting for people!!
