Dutch Sicker than Americans

Q and A last night was discussing euthanasia. (video and transcript here).

A quadriplegic man raised his concern (33m55s) that "We don't want to go down the track as, in fact, has happened, I believe, in America, where a 25 year old woman who was a ballerina got arthritis in her toes and went to a doctor and asked to be euthanised, killed, and she was."

He concluded, "To me that's a symptom of what I would call a sick society" and "there is something wrong with that society".

There is also something wrong with his story. If the story is as reported, it didn't happen in America. It happened in Holland.

I do however tend to agree with the quadriplegic man.

A sick society is one where you blame society for everything bad that happens rather than individuals taking responsibility for their own actions.

A sick society is one where individual rights are replaced with collective restrictions because one idiot totally missuses that right to inflict self harm.

A sick society is one where the default response is to blame America.

I was surprised that nobody pulled him up on it.

You'd think an advocate (against) euthanasia, who brought up the point himself, would have a better reference than "I heard somewhere that in America....."

it's on Q and A so it must be America's fault - just insert a generic evil.

If that fails, they can all blame Israel. But carefully, the poor dears wouldn't want to look anti semitic. Well not obviously.

Euthanasia is illegal in America. It is considered homicide.

If that man from Australia's State-run media has any details which he would like to share with the American authorities regarding this homicide he allegedly "knows" happened, it would be most welcome.
