Carbon tax a "lost cause"

Fairfax reports:
Reader in politics at the University of Queensland Ian Ward said the public had made their minds up on the issue and any effort to sell the [carbon] tax was "a lost cause".
Anti-carbon tax opinion was driven by right-wing dominated media reports, right? Wrong:
Dr Ward said the tax was being used as a fulcrum for wider resentment and anger towards the Labor government over failures to manage past problems such as the asylum seeker issue.

"It's not as if the carbon tax issue has damaged the government, the government was damaged when it took up this issue," he said.

"This is an issue on which opinion is entrenched, it's an issue which is a touchstone for much wider resentment of the Labor government.
Australians are merely reacting to perceived Labor government incompetence.

Labor seems to think that if the carbon tax gets passed early and they can demonstrate that most people will not be affected, then it wont be an issue come election time. In fact they can use it to their advantage against Abbott.

Even if this was the case, they also have to be sure the system will not be scammed, which is harder to do.

As soon as the scammers come out, history will be seen to have repeated itself and Labor is toast.
