Bing catching Google

If – and it's a very big if – current trends continue Bing will in 2012 overtake Google as the most used search engine. Cool. Typing "Bing it" is so much easier than typing "Google it".

The tactics used for market dominance, while understandable, are a pain in the arse.

Bing is just loaded up automatically with all Microsoft's OS or IE. It's google that has to push you into changing. Load some other application and you get a window popping up "Shall we also install Chrome web browser?" "Shall we make Google your default search engine?" Do that and next time Microsoft is pushing a message in your face to make IE the default web browser and Bing the default search engine.

If Bing overtakes Google or Google stays on top, it will have nothing to do with product quality and everything to do with who is better at beating their customers into submission (or tricking you into loading their product on the back of some other).

Chistery,

You are forgetting the huge number of Mac users, which includes those on iPhones and iPads.

I doubt Apple will be driving their captive audience towards Microsoft.

In iOS, Safari offers Google, Yahoo and Bing as search engine for users.
