Cyclone Yasi fails to meet expectations

So far only one cyclone Yasi death is confirmed: an unfortunate young man who accidentally suffocated himself with electric-generator exhaust. Thus the worst cyclone ever in the history of the universe has failed to deliver the promised death and chaos.

Now don't get me wrong, Yasi was indeed a potent storm that caused significant damage but on all indications was not the the apocalyptic storm we were lead to believe.

I wouldn't be surpised if Yasi was delibertely exagerated by the authorities to ensure that more people would evacuate.

If so, it would definately have contributed to the tiny death toll.

Bolt has a post from reader, Nonna. Her comment is that Cyclone Larry wiped out all the unsafe buildings, which were replaced by buildings that are more cyclone proof. Had Larry not come though 5 years prior, the devastation would have been much worse.

"Nonna" is well known as a pathetic drama queen at Bolta's. She and PSFR give me the shits. The Queen and King of Holier Than Thou Moral Superiority.

Think what you will about Nonna's past, Anon (convenient 11.24), but her message in that post contains a message you do not "get".

Cyclone Yasi would have been far more destructive if the lessons of Larry had not been learnt.

In other words look to history and do not make the same mistakes.

We suffered, but we will recover - as we always do. Nothing new here.

Queensland. Beautiful one day, gone the next. Repeat ad infinitum.

This is distressing to read.

Yasi was a category 5 cyclone. This fact is not in doubt. (for comparison, cyclone Tracy was a low Cat 4, possibly even a high 3)

Informing the public: "Cat 5 cyclone approaching" is not by any stretch of the imagination exaggeration, when what is approaching is actually a Cat 5.

Possibly neither the poster nor the commenters above have been through a tropical cyclone. I would be very disappointed if the above comments or the original post were the considered opinion of someone who knows just what it is to prepare for, and sit out, the passage of a cyclone.

Lack of deaths points to preparation (driven by experience) & anyone who says there is no chaos hasn't looked any further than Cairns or Townsville, neither of which was within 100km of the epicentre.

SatB,

I'm not disputing the savage nature of Yasi but I do question the hype promoting Yasi as the most God awful cyclone, ever, when it clearly wasn't.

By the way, I lived for over four years on the northwest coast of WA and experienced numerous cyclones, none of them coming anywhere near Yasi, however.

What a ludicrous post. If you've lived in a cyclone-prone area, as you claim, you'll know that the key to preventing casualties is preparation. Look at the boats racked up in Cardwell Harbour, the destroyed houses in Mission Beach. If people hadn't taken the appropriate measures, there would have been deaths. If it had hit Cairns or Townsville, same deal. Grow up, you moron.

2. staleness or insipidity of thought or language; triteness

And not reading the post one comments upon with complete lack of awareness or insight; you have trained well.
