Went to the Victorian State Library yesterday and saw, amongst other assorted wonders, an exhibition on Ned Kelly. There I learnt, via the explanatory notes, that Ned may not have been a thief and a murder, but a mere product of his time - an oppressed member of an Irish immigrant family who was driven to crime! I also learnt that it was the view of the 'authorities' - ie, the coppers who were made to imprison and catch Ned Kelly - that was suspect, rather than the views of Kelly himself, or those of the Kelly sympathisers.

All in all, whoever did the gallery notes for that exhibition did quite a nice little line in sly insinuation.
